On Saturday, 25th May, the heart of St Neots was buzzing with excitement as the young superheroes of the “Curious About Ice Cream” programme unveiled their innovative ice cream business, “Scoop Nova”. This initiative, run by Inspire 2 Ignite in partnership with NCS – National Citizen Service Trust, saw nine young visionaries from the local Special Education Needs school Samuel Pepys and the wider community transforming their creative ideas into a delicious reality.

Over the past four weeks, under the guidance of nominated Team Leader Mr. Galacticone (aka Luke) and the Inspire 2 Ignite team, these young entrepreneurs embarked on a mission to create an ice cream business from scratch. They tackled everything from logo design and flyer creation to flavour names and marketing strategies.

The Main Event

From 11 am to 4 pm at the Citizen Hub, St Neots, the young entrepreneurs sold their out-of-this-world ice cream to enthusiastic locals, who were eager to support their venture and enjoy a cool treat on a warm sunny day.

In addition to setting up their stall at the Citizen Hub, the participants actively went out to the market square, engaging with the community and persuading people to come and buy their ice cream. Their enthusiastic interactions and persuasive efforts were key in driving foot traffic and generating interest in their products.

The event received overwhelming support from the community, with many locals turning up to sample the creative flavours and show their appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the young participants.

The young people absolutely smashed it, generating a whopping £400 in sales! All profits from the ice cream sales were split among the young entrepreneurs, providing them not only with practical business experience but also with equity in the result.

"I thought it was an amazing experience. It helped me meet new people and make new friends."

The programme not only provided business skills but also helped build crucial life skills such as confidence and independence. One notable example is a 17-year-old participant who, for the first time, walked from their secondary school to a new location to attend one of the programme sessions. Upon arriving at the Citizen Hub, they expressed feeling safe and proud of their achievement, underscoring the personal growth and confidence gained through the programme.

"As a parent observing the Curious about Ice cream programme, I saw my child's confidence improve dramatically after each session and they came home from the Market day absolutely buzzing after achieving £400 in sales.

The impact of the programme hasn't just stopped there, as my child's recent challenges with anxiety and depression stopped when taking part in these inspirational activities.

I will encourage my child to continue to take part in future opportunities and can't recommend this enough to other parents/carers."

A special thank you to Lewis Kahraman, an Ignite advocate, for kindly donating his ice cream cart, which was instrumental in inspiring these young people. His generosity provided the perfect platform for the participants to showcase their talents and bring their business to life.

We are immensely grateful to the people of St Neots for their unwavering support and enthusiasm. Your encouragement has been vital in making this event a success and in empowering our young entrepreneurs.

Thank you again to NCS – National Citizen Service, Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, Birketts LLP, Cambscuisine, Durkan Homes, and Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority for supporting this year’s Curious programmes. It takes a community to inspire and ignite young people.

“Seeing the young people come out of their shell and go from strength to strength highlights the need to give young people opportunities like this. It was a chance for them to see what being an entrepreneur is all about through hands on experience learning vital skills along the way.”

Alex Richards- Community Manager, Inspire 2 Ignite

We are pleased to announce that we will be continuing our partnership with NCS, delivering similar programmes over the next 12 months. The next programme, “Side Hustles With Purpose,” will see a group of 16 young people aged 15-18 develop a social enterprise to address a local issue that matters to them.
