About the Opportunity

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in a hospital, but not necessarily as a doctor or nurse?

The NHS Anchor Project offers a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the many non-clinical careers that keep a hospital running. Hosted by North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, this short work experience placement gives you the chance to explore different departments, meet NHS professionals, and discover career pathways you may never have considered.

This is an observational placement designed to help you build confidence, develop your understanding of the NHS, and experience a professional workplace in one of the UK’s largest employers.

What You’ll Be Doing

During your placement, you’ll spend time with a variety of hospital teams and learn how they work together to provide excellent patient care.

You may have the opportunity to:

  • Observe how reception teams welcome and support patients, visitors, and staff
  • Learn about the important role porters play in transporting patients, equipment, and medical supplies safely around the hospital
  • Discover how Medical Records teams securely manage patient information and support clinical services
  • Gain an understanding of confidentiality, health and safety, and professional workplace expectations
  • Meet NHS staff, ask questions, and explore different career pathways within the organisation
  • Take part in a guided tour of the hospital and learn how departments work together behind the scenes

What You’ll Gain

  • Real insight into non-clinical careers within the NHS
  • Experience of a professional healthcare environment
  • Increased confidence in a workplace setting
  • A better understanding of how hospitals operate behind the scenes
  • Awareness of future career pathways in healthcare support services
  • Valuable experience to strengthen your CV and future applications

Who They’re Looking For

This placement is ideal for someone who:

  • Is interested in learning about careers in the NHS
  • Is reliable, respectful, and willing to engage with staff
  • Has a positive attitude and is keen to learn
  • Can follow guidance and professional workplace expectations
  • Wants to gain experience in a real working environment

No previous experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to get involved.

Not Sure if It’s Right for You?

If you’re unsure about applying, why not come along to our insight day first?
